What is a piano?

When did the piano take center stage? As the chosen weapon of the talented virtuoso and a tool that has seductively attracted nothing short of the most vibrant geniuses, world leaders, kings and motley audiences alike – The piano has been paired with the performers and appreciation of every class of man since its debut. It is and always has been an instrument for conjuring magic… for delivering the varied spells of air moving harmony, with the subtlety of a feather, or the thundering footsteps of a giant – The piano has enthusiastically narrated the lives of most western cultures for over 3 centuries. From our family gatherings – to holiday concerts and your Sunday services, the piano has been there. Can you even imagine a feature film, ballet, musical theatre show, a Wild West saloon or an evening at a fine hotel restaurant, without the rapturous and brilliant aura of a well played piano? We think not.

Early survey results show that more than 90% of everyone in the United States alone has, at one moment in time, while watching a pianist mix his alluring potion, said, “I wish I knew how to play that!” In almost every other case, it appears that the remaining minority have, at least, more humbly, had the very same thought to themselves.

What an invention!

The piano was invented almost 3 centuries ago in 1720, by Bartolomeo Cristofori of Padua, Italy! Much to the chagrin of harpsichord enthusiasts and well stocked dealers, the piano, with its many varieties and personalities has wiggled it’s way into the living rooms, hotels, classrooms, and concert halls around the world in a very impressive manner. Since the middle of the18th century, the piano has held a central place in music and is the standard instrument in all of music. Today, with a plethora of types, brands, styles, and finishes, the piano will call to you at one time or another.
